Community Connections Lewisham are excited to be a part of a unique, new project, aimed at tackling Health Inequalities and supporting Lewisham residents as they go through their prostate cancer treatment.

We secured funding for a new Cancer Project Worker, who will dedicate their time to supporting the patients and growing our links with the hospital. We are working with prostate cancer patients to support them to improve their health, wellbeing and happiness throughout their treatment, and improve their chances of recovery.

Patients participating in the project will receive the following:
  • Support over a 9 month period (August 2023 – March 2024) from a dedicated Cancer Project Worker with Lived Experience
  • Support from the Cancer Project Worker with finding and accessing services, support, groups and activities that support their health and happiness
  • Opportunity to help launch, grow and develop a Peer Support Group alongside other patients in the pathway and the Cancer Project Worker
  • Access to all the usual Community Connections Lewisham services including the phoneline, email contact and Drop Ins
  • Opportunity to take part in an exciting new project, that we hope will prove successful and be rolled out further in the future
If you or someone you know would like to be referred into the project, you can do so here.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about the project, you can give us a call on 0330 058 3464 and ask to speak to Caroline, or email communityconnections@ageuklands.org.uk
Other opportunities to support the project:

We are looking for residents with Lived Experience and Lived Expertise of the Lewisham cancer treatment to support our work. These are paid opportunities at £15 an hour. Lived Experience and Lived Expertise could be:

  • Experiencing cancer treatment yourself
  • Working with cancer patients
  • Supporting family or friends through cancer treatment
  • Working in healthcare services in Lewisham
Steering Group – A group of people who meet every two months to talk about how the project is going, what needs doing, and make sure we are keeping to the key aims of the project. We estimate this will be 4-5 hours of work over the next 9 months.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities and want to talk about them, you are welcome to email communityconnections@ageuklands.org.uk or you can call our mainline number on 0330 058 3464 and ask to speak with Caroline.

South East London Cancer Alliance – Prostate cancer animations

Black men with prostate cancer, living in south east London, have teamed up with students at the London College of Communication to develop a series of thought-provoking animations to encourage conversations about the disease.

The animations are narrated by the patients who have shared their experience of being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The individuals spoke about their experience of testing, fears of prostate cancer and attitudes towards cancer screening in the Black community.

The series aims to support Black communities to have open conversations about the risk of Black men developing prostate cancer and the importance of getting tested.
